That’s why USA Health Mitchell Cancer Institute is partnering with Hope Community in offering FREE prostate cancer screenings at our Community Health Fair on March 29th, 2025 from 9am-1pm at the Anna T. Jeanes School property (6925 Twin Beech Road in Fairhope). >>Read more about our Health Fair>>

Why is Screening Important?

Early detection is key! Alabama has one of the highest rates of prostate cancer in the United States. Additionally, African American men are 70% more likely to be diagnosed with prostate cancer and over twice as likely to die from it compared to white men. The good news is that screening helps detect prostate cancer early, before it becomes life-threatening or causes serious problems.

What to Expect:

After you sign up to be screened, a representative from the Mitchell Cancer Institute at USA Health will contact you before the day of the event to verify your interest and eligibility. On the day of the event, trained medical staff will be on site performing the FREE prostate screening test by collecting a blood sample only. This simple test is called the Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) test and can be a crucial first step in identifying potential issues. Early detection can lead to more treatment options and significantly improve the chances of survival.

PSA test results are not available on the same day. All normal and abnormal results will be shared confidentially with participants via phone, letter, and/or email.

Any abnormal PSA results will be referred to USA Health Urology for additional testing covered by the program or to a provider of your choosing (not covered under the program). This screening service is provided by the Alabama Department of Public Health Prostate Cancer Prevention Program and covers the cost of:

  • Office visits and counseling to discuss results
  • Biopsy
  • Pathology

We understand that discussing men’s health issues can sometimes be uncomfortable. Unfortunately, misconceptions about prostate cancer persist, including unfounded links to unhealthy lifestyles or behaviors. However, these are not established risk factors for the disease. While research continues to explore potential contributing factors, the primary risk factors remain age, family history, and race/ethnicity—particularly being of African descent.

We aim to dispel these myths and foster a safe space for open discussion. The USA Health team will be available to provide accurate information, answer your questions, and address any concerns. Hope Community and our healthcare partners are committed to creating a supportive environment and providing reliable health information – especially for communities facing unique challenges in accessing healthcare.

If you have any questions or concerns about the PSA test, please contact Sonya Starks from USA Health at (770) 837-5646 or email us at [email protected].
