You may be hearing names like “Culinary Medicine” and “Lifestyle Medicine” more frequently. Plant-based foods are now a popular choice for many who are inspired by recent nutrition studies and trends.
At Hope Community, our values include food education and community engagement.
FoodRx is aimed with this goal in mind. Our “FoodRx Healthy Cooking Class” brings 20 dinner guests together to enjoy a hands-on, healthy cooking workshop with nutritional insights and health statistics from local physicians, nurses, dietitians and a professional chef. Through collaborating with University of South Alabama Health’s Integrative Health and Wellness department, physicians Dr. Ben Schrubbe and Dr. Mark Hammond, and Certified Executive Chef and director of Coastal Community College’s Culinary Arts program, FoodRx events are meant to share the positive impact culinary medicine and evidence-based nutrition have on health and disease. The class will be divided into four or five teams, each preparing a portion of dinner before enjoying the communal meal together around the dinner table.
Our hope is that classes like these will provide the knowledge and tools for everyone to take control of their health with local, affordable, and nutritional cooking strategies, even those who may not have the means to access fresh, whole foods frequently or easily.
Registration is required as space is limited. We are only able to accommodate 20 participants at each event. Cost is $50 per person. Please view our website’s calendar to check when our next dinner and class will be held.
Our FoodRx events bring great company, fascinating information, and excellent food together for a wonderful evening. We look forward to seeing you there!
